Využívá data šetření Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS, vlna 2021) a kombinuje mezinárodní srovnání s distribuční a regresní analýzou.
Závěr studie Rodinná solidarita: finanční podpora seniorů a preseniorů
Abstract
This study examines the role of financial support from relatives in the incomes of older adults’ households in the Czech Republic and places the Czech case in a broader European context. Using data from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS, 2021 wave), it combines crossnational comparison with distributional and regression analyses at the household level. The results show that financial support from relatives is substantially more prevalent in the Czech Republic than in most European countries, but its importance is highly concentrated among a small group of households. Among seniors, higher support is strongly associated with single female households, while among pre-seniors it is primarily linked to housing cost burdens. Family transfers thus appear to function as an informal compensatory mechanism under conditions of financial strain.
Conclusion of the study ‘Family Solidarity: Financial Support for Older People and Those Approaching Old Age’
The results show that financial assistance from relatives is significantly more widespread in the Czech Republic than in most of the European countries surveyed. At the same time, however, this is a highly concentrated phenomenon: for most households, family transfers represent only a marginal supplement to income, whilst for a small group of households they constitute a substantial part of the budget and can reach very high relative values. It is precisely for these households that family support can be seen as a potentially key stabilising mechanism.
Regression analyses suggest that financial support from family is systematically directed towards households in a more precarious economic situation. Among older people, household composition plays a crucial role, particularly the situation of women living alone, which is consistent with their lower old-age pensions. For pre-seniors, the burden of housing costs emerges as the strongest factor, whilst higher economic activity and higher income from social benefits are associated with lower relative support from family. These results support the interpretation of family transfers as an informal compensatory mechanism that is activated primarily in situations of financial strain.
However, the interpretation of the results is subject to several limitations. The HFCS captures financial support in aggregate form and does not fully account for other forms of support, such as gifts in kind, personal care, assistance in dealing with the authorities, or others. The analysis is based on cross-sectional data from 2021 and identifies correlations rather than causal relationships. Despite these limitations, the study provides the first systematic empirical picture of intergenerational financial support in the Czech context and offers a relevant basis for further research and for considerations regarding the future direction of policy on older people.
