Unionising freelancers and self-employed workers in Norway Johanne Stenseth Huseby

Abstrakt

New employment regimes via which companies hire solo self-employed workers rather than employees, have led to greater attention being focused on how to protect the wages and working conditions of these workers. The aim of this article is to describe approaches, attitudes and strategies promoted by Norwegian trade unions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for the recruitment and inclusion of freelancers and self-employed workers. Trade unions play an important role in Norway in terms of regulating rights and their enforcement, and the formulation of policies. While some unions
have aimed at recruiting solo self-employed workers and freelancers for some time, this aim has become more widespread in recent years. Their objectives include securing fair wages and working conditions for these groups of workers and addressing the ongoing debate on the differing rights of employees, freelancers and the self-employed.
