Současně identifikovalo řadu výzev, kterým tyto děti i jejich rodiny čelí v oblasti rodinných vztahů, volného času, sociálních kontaktů, vzdělávání, pracovního uplatnění i finančního zabezpečení.
Abstract
The issue of children growing up in a household with a sibling who requires long-term care due to a disability, serious illness, or disorder has only begun to be addressed in recent years in scholarly literature, the social services system, and public debate. The first part of the Young Carers research project, presented herein, therefore aimed to map as comprehensively as possible the living conditions, experiences, and needs of this often-overlooked group of children and, based on the findings, to formulate recommendations for family and social policy that could help improve their situation and that of their families in the Czech Republic. Data collection was conducted using a qualitative methodology through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with the parents of these children as well as with the caregiving siblings themselves. The families’ perspective was supplemented by the views of experts who encounter caregiving families in their professional practice. The research showed that caregiving siblings are involved to varying degrees in caring for the child with a disability and that this role significantly affects their daily lives. At the same time, it identified a number of challenges that these young carers and their families face in the areas of family relationships, leisure time, social interactions, education, employment, and financial security.
The research findings highlight the need to develop support services specifically targeted at caregiving siblings, particularly in the areas of psychological support and sibling support groups. At the same time, they draw attention to the importance of supporting caregiving families as a whole, taking into account the needs of all family members, including young carers.
