The elimination of prejudice against engineering disciplines with regard to career decision-making for girls/women
The main objective of the project is to contribute to a desirable positive change in opinions concerning the nature of engineering professions and to eliminate prejudices against the participation of girls/women in the engineering sector at all professional levels. The project intends to achieve such a change of opinions through the implementation of awareness-raising activities with respect to the long-term perspective of engineering in the Czech Republic and the current form of working in engineering aimed at educational/career counsellors at elementary and secondary schools and Labour Office personnel (career counsellors) who significantly influence the career choices of young people (pupils/students). Thus, the project is focusing on tackling the current lack of accurate information on the current nature of work in the field of engineering and the resulting prejudices surrounding the unsuitability of engineering disciplines for the employment of girls/women, especially concerning career counsellors at the Labour Office of the Czech Republic and educational/career counsellors at elementary and secondary schools who, in addition to their parents, significantly influence girls’/ women’s decisions on their future careers. The main outputs of the project will include the compilation of educational materials on the current potential and character of the engineering sector, which will provide all the necessary information on the nature of engineering professions. The project also includes the conducting of workshops for career counsellors from the Labour Office of the Czech Republic as well as from elementary and secondary schools at which they are introduced to trends in the engineering sector and the real character of engineering professions. An integral part of the project consists of the organisation of visits for career counsellors to selected engineering companies. Moreover, a parallel, though no less important, impact will concern the introduction of networking between employers, career counsellors and representatives of the Czech Republic’s principal university responsible for mechanical engineering, i.e. the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU).
