Presentation by a RILSA researcher at the Federation of Business Disciplines Conference

18. 04. 2024

Umut Unal, Head of the Macroeconomic Analyses Department at RILSA, presented a paper entitled “Inflationary Dynamics of Labour Market Activity: Evidence from the Czech Republic,” co-authored by Robin Maialeh and Guilhem Sirot, at the Federation of Business Disciplines (FBD) Conference held in Galveston, TX, USA, from 10 – 13 April 2024. The FBD incorporates a total of nine associations, and this year saw the 51st annual meeting of the federation.

The study explores the intricate dynamics of inflation in the Czech Republic, focusing specifically on how these dynamics are influenced by the labour market. The findings indicate a significant relationship between labour market dynamics and inflation, notably that at times of increased activity in the labour market, inflation tends to rise gradually over the following years. However, this relationship is complex and varies depending on the overall economic conditions. During periods of economic expansion, heightened labour market activity may exert upward pressure on prices, thus leading to a moderate increase in inflation. Nevertheless, if this situation persists, inflation may escalate significantly, particularly in comparison to periods of economic downturn.

The study, which is now being subjected to the peer review process, will form one of the outputs of the RILSA autonomous research project Current Macroeconomic Issues and Methodological Aspects of Basic Research.
